3 WORDPRESS MAINTENANCE TASKS YOU SHOULDN’T FORGET

September 15, 20223 min read

WordPress has become one of the most commonly used content management systems (CMS) on the web, with roughly 62% of all websites using some kind of CMS platform utilize WordPress. Not everyone is using WordPress well, however. Here’s three tips to help your site stay relevant and on the first page where users can find you.

Updating Your Site

Performance updates and security enhancements will increase your user experience (UX) and help keep your site from getting hacked. Things like plugins, themes, and other features need to be updated as soon as the latest version is available.

Before you begin any update, log in to your WordPress site as an admin and backup your current database structure, files, and content. Then you’ll want to update your plugins. After all, backups are completed, upgrade the content, files, plugins, and database structure, and then finish by updating your WordPress theme. After all, updates are complete you should test for functionality. Assuming everything is working correctly, you’re done!

Clearing Old Files

You also want to make sure that you are putting out high-quality content that will appeal to your audience. You want a good mix of content that is visually striking and informative. Multimedia content boasts higher engagement rates than plain text content. Creating videos and taking good photos can help your content to stand out. You also want to make sure that you are writing captions that are compelling and relevant to your audience, so they are more likely to interact with your page and follow you.

Files on your WordPress site build up over time, and this can lead to slower loading times and decreased UX. Files that you’re no longer using or are no longer relevant to your brand can add to this back-end clutter.

Shifting through and clearing unnecessary files by hand is a long, tedious process that no one actually wants to do. If you just can’t stand doing this or don’t find it worth your time, you can always hit the web and search for WordPress-specific hosting plans, which will do the work for you.

Testing Site Performance

Even when you’re in between updates, it can be a good idea to regularly check in and test your site for UX purposes. Slow site performance can deter users, and poorly organized content can make it harder for search engines to crawl your page.

Scheduling time for routine maintenance can be tough, however, depending on your available resources, so again, you may want to consider a hosting plan. You should also keep a list of regular tasks that you need to do so you don’t forget anything.

Many site owners spend time focusing on adding new content or features, but making sure that your site is updated and secure is equally as important. Keeping your site current can be time-consuming, and not nearly as exciting as loading up the latest content or product features. Fortunately, there are many companies to help you save time and maintain your site for you.
